Having Trouble with Your Door Lock? We'll Diagnose the Issue, Provide a Fixed Price Quote, and Repair It — Often on the Same Day.
Most UPVC and composite doors don’t fail without warning. Long before the lock finally jams shut, you’ll have noticed the handle going stiff, the door needing a “knack” to lock, or that grinding feeling when you turn the key. Those niggles are early warning signs that the multipoint locking mechanism inside the door is wearing out — and they’re much cheaper to put right than waiting until you’re locked out on the doorstep.
Hagen Locksmiths Ltd. has been repairing and replacing UPVC and composite door locks throughout Sunderland, Tyne and Wear and the wider North East for years. We diagnose the actual fault, quote a fixed price before any work starts, fit genuine manufacturer parts wherever possible, and show you any parts we’ve replaced — so you can see exactly what you’ve paid for.
Common UPVC & Composite Door Lock Problems We Fix
If any of the following resonate with you, know that you’re not alone — these are the challenges we encounter nearly every day across Sunderland and neighbouring postcodes.
The Door Needs a “Knack” — Lifting, Slamming or Pressing Hard to Lock
If you’re lifting the handle harder, leaning against the door to engage the lock, or showing visitors how to close it, the door has likely “dropped” or the multipoint mechanism is binding. If ignored, this often results in a snapped gearbox or lock failure at the worst moment. We can realign the door, adjust hinges, and replace worn parts before it gets to that point.
The Door Is Locked Shut and the Handle Won’t Move
A handle that lifts loosely or won’t lift typically indicates a failure in the multipoint gearbox. Avoid forcing it to prevent damage to the door slab and higher costs. Call us; we can often open the door non-destructively, replace the gearbox, and have you back in the same day.
Crunchy, Grinding or Stiff Door Handle
The grinding feel in the handle indicates metal fatigue in the gearbox, with the cassette, springs, and cams wearing against each other. Once it starts, it worsens. We identify the specific mechanism (Yale, ERA, Avocet, Maco, Roto, Fuhr, Mila, GU — each brand has a unique gearbox profile) and provide a like-for-like replacement or upgrade to a stronger modern option.
Difficult to Lock or Unlock from Outside
If the key turns reluctantly or not at all, the issue is typically the euro cylinder, not the gearbox — worn pin chambers, a damaged keyway, or dirt. We'll service or replace the cylinder and check if it meets modern anti-snap standards expected by your home insurance.
Premature Corrosion on Coastal or Exposed Properties
Sunderland's coastal air damages door hardware faster than expected. Homes in Roker, Seaburn, Whitburn, and along the Durham coast suffer corrosion, pitted handles, and seized cylinders sooner than inland properties. We use marine-grade anti-corrosion lubricants and recommend stainless or coastal-rated replacements for irreparable mechanisms.
Door Won’t Lock In Hot or Cold Weather
UPVC and composite doors tend to expand and contract with seasonal temperature changes, meaning a door that functions perfectly in May might drag in August. Typically, this issue can be resolved with a simple hinge or keep adjustment rather than requiring a part replacement. This is precisely the type of repair we prefer to make instead of selling you a brand-new mechanism that isn’t necessary.
Why UPVC & Composite Door Lock Mechanisms Fail
Multipoint locking mechanisms are the long, narrow gearboxes that run the full length of your door, engaging the hooks, deadbolts, and rollers in the frame when you lift the handle. They're engineered to last — but they're not invincible.
- Heavy double or triple glazing exerts continuous downward pressure on hinges, causing the door to drop and forcing the mechanism out of alignment.
- Reinforced security panels add weight and reduce the door's natural "give," accelerating gearbox wear.
- Seasonal expansion and contraction (sometimes daily, in coastal weather) load and unload the mechanism thousands of times a year.
- Years of normal use — a domestic front door is opened and closed several thousand times a year, and even quality gearboxes have a finite lifespan.
- DIY "fixes" — spraying WD-40 into a euro cylinder, over-tightening hinges or using the wrong screws are some of the most common reasons we're called out a second time.
Genuine Parts, Fixed Price, and We Show You Exactly What’s Wrong
We work the way we’d want a tradesperson to work in our own homes. That means:
- A clear explanation of what the actual problem is, in plain English, before we touch anything.
- A fixed price quoted up front — no “while we’re here” add-ons once the job has started.
- Genuine manufacturer parts wherever they’re still available.
- Where the original part has been discontinued (common with older Yale, ERA, Fuhr and Maco mechanisms), we source reissue parts or new old stock from the original manufacturer rather than fitting an inferior pattern part.
- Any faulty parts we remove are shown to you, so you can see exactly why they needed to come out.
- All work guaranteed.

UPVC & Composite Door Repairs — Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a UPVC door lock repair cost?
Most gearbox replacements fall into a tight price band, with cylinder swaps typically less. Because every door is different, we always quote a fixed price after diagnosis rather than estimate blind — you’ll know exactly what it’ll cost before any work begins.
Should I repair or replace my UPVC door?
If the door slab and frame are sound, a lock or mechanism repair is almost always more cost-effective than replacing the whole door. Full door replacements are typically only worthwhile when the slab itself is warped, swollen or extensively damaged.
My door won’t lock — should I keep trying it?
No. Forcing a stiff handle is one of the fastest ways to turn a cheap repair into an expensive one — you can snap the gearbox cams or shear the spindle. Stop, secure the property as best you can, and call us.
Do you fit anti-snap cylinders?
Yes. We fit TS 007 3-star and Sold Secure Diamond rated cylinders as standard upgrades — they’re the cylinders most home insurance policies now expect, and they’re the most effective single defence against lock-snapping.Diamond-rated
Do you work on composite doors as well as UPVC?
Yes — the visible door slab is different, but the multipoint mechanism behind it is broadly the same family of products. We regularly service and replace mechanisms in Solidor, Rockdoor, Endurance, Apeer, Distinction, and other composite doors regularly.
Can you come out the same day?
In most cases, yes — particularly for lockouts and “won’t lock” situations. Routine repairs (a stiff handle that still works) we’ll usually book for the next available slot to keep costs down.
My door is on the coast and the lock keeps seizing — is it worth repairing again?
Possibly not. If you’re on the seafront or in a very exposed property and you’ve already had two or three corrosion-related repairs, we’d normally recommend a coastal-rated mechanism with stainless steel components and an annual service to break the cycle.
